Recognizing Advocacy in History: Alexander Kimel
Biography
Alexander was a survivor from the holocaust. He was born in a small town know as Podhajce in Galizia. The 'Red Army', Russian military forces known as RKKA, invaded his hometown in 1939. The Germans killed almost all the Jews in the time period between 1941 and 1943. Only 1000 out of 10,000 survived. Alexander, personally, was never at a concentration camp. He was assigned to help a German soldier known as Hans. (Yes, the same Hans from the Book Thief.)
Advocacy
Alexander, personally, wasn't a very important figure. Still, he had a friend known as Willy. Little Willy stood up to the Germans and he was stripped naked and taken to the gas chambers. Willy pried open the train door on the way to the gas chamber and jumped off. Willy survived then he was drafted into the Red Army. He died one day before the signing of Armistice. He died during the Battle for Berlin. The thing that Alexander was known for was his book in which he describes how he was hiding with Willy during the holocaust with his mother, father, and sister. This book is called "My First Kaddish".
Apply It To My Own Life
I can apply this to my own life by looking at Alexander's book in my first resource. Alexander states how he found it silly how scared he was of his exams. Even though his experience in the holocaust was far more traumatizing, he states that his phobia of exams still came back. He states how strong any type of phobia can be. So when I look at this book and his friend Willy, I try not to be scared of exams and also try to conquer my phobias.
