Cabbage Litmus Paper Lab
Reflection Sheet
1. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
Our standard was to know the difference between bases and acids. The cabbage litmus paper turns red/blue depending whether you put an acid or a base on it. We did a series of experiments where we placed liquids on the cabbage litmus paper to see whether it would turn blue or red. Through this we learned what is an acid and what is a base. If the litmus paper turns red, you have an acid. If the litmus paper turns blue, you have a base.
2. What are the steps you took to compete and do well on this assignment?
I went up to where the liquids were and put the liquids on my paper. I didn't get the liquids that my partner already got. Then, my partner and I observed whether the paper turned red or blue and recorded the results. When the cabbage litmus paper started falling off we glued it back on. Finally, we waited until the next day to see if the color at the 2nd day.
3. This assignment demonstrates the following strengths...
This assignment demonstrates that I know the difference in acids and bases through the cabbage litmus paper. I also know what color acids or bases turn the paper. I learned that acids can conduct electricity. Since acids can conduct electricity, you can power a battery by using a lemon.
4. I could have improved my work on this assignment by...
When we put the liquids on our litmus paper, I put too much. For each liquid I put in 2-3 drops. This later on effected my results because all the excess liquid spilled onto other papers. This made a base I had turn the paper red, even though it was suppose to turn blue. I ended up looking at my neighbor's group to see what results they got.
5. How will you apply the skills you learned from this assignment in either the real world when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
I can apply this skill in class to know what is a base or acid. I can also apply this skill by know what acids and bases taste like. Acids taste sour and bases taste bitter. I can use this in future tests in science class.
